June--It is Pride Month!

In anticipation of Pride Month, I created 3 collages with a mid-century feel. The colors were taken from the "sunset lesbian flag."

The lesbian flag has gone through a few iterations. The earlier "lipstick" flag did not represent butch, non-femme, or androgynous lesbians.  The "sunset flag" seems to have been widely accepted.

However,  I am hardly an expert, being a straight old Quaker, so please leave comments below. My education and that of others will broaden.

Our society has come a long way. Thank goodness.

When I was a young teacher, I knew other teachers who had to keep who they were a secret--for fear of loosing their jobs.

We still have far to go in raising individual and collective consciousness, but oh it is so much more open than before.

To celebrate, I started creating some gay pride collages. Each piece utilizes the colors adopted by the community it represents. These  three echo the lesbian flag.

When researching the Lesbian flag I came across a fascinating museum located in London. I recommend you visit it!

"The Horniman connects us all with global cultures and the natural environment, encouraging us to shape a positive future for the world" we all share.

That article on the history of the flag from the Horniman Museum and Gardens? It is here:  https://www.horniman.ac.uk/story/a-horniman-lesbian-flag/

In the Studio This Week

In truth, Jim and I have spent weeks on the website, getting ready for the launch. Drives me round the bend when I can't work in the studio every day.

Regardless, this is what I have been working on in the studio for the past few weeks. Lots of collage work. Creating lots of painted and printed paper for that collage work. And lots (a lot of “lots” here) of time in an amazing online course with Jane Davies: Mini Collage.

Jane is one of the painters and collage Artists whose work I admire.

The photos posted on this blog today, are by an amateur (me) on an iPhone. Once our website launches, we will get the originals to our amazing printer, Archival Arts.

Their photographer will take professional photographs. And we will be ready to post those prints for sale.

Whew. Creating this website has been a learning experience.

And it was Jim (husband), along with the amazing Help Desk staff at https://www.faso.com who created this website. https://DeirdreStudio.com

Jim is also the business manager, involved in all the back-end tasks

I just created the art.

AND approximately 50 friends, Friends and Family have tested the website and completed an evaluation survey, using  https://surveyplanet.com before we could launch.

It takes a village.

And we are humbled and grateful

Deirdre & Jim
